The Memorial Design

 

Adelaide Boer War Memorial The existing memorial in Adelaide is typical of the basic style required. The following is a more detailed description.

  • General

    • Soldier in the uniform of the day on a horse rampant with Boer war era saddlery.

    • The solder with Lee Enfield rifle or Lee Medford held high in left hand. Horse to be on high plinth with plaques thereon.

  • All to be in cast bronze. Curved wall behind the memorial with further plaques.

  • Top of plinth to have upward rocky slope with high end towards the AWM.

  • Horse to be in forward attack attitude with mane and tail steaming. Gait to be gallop, canter, or in a position of an impending turn to take action against an ambush, whichever places all legs on the ground except for the right hand front leg.

  • Plinth to be half turned toward the AWM so that the horse and rider also adopt the same line of sight.

  • Plinth may be rectangular.

  • Plinth to be of donated Australian sandstone. If the donation does not occur, stone may be selected based on cost related to funds available, maybe using some stone from Boer War battle site.

  • If sandstone the plinth may display small pieces of stone from the sites of some famous Boer War battles.

  • The soldier to have a detailed face as if it was sculptured from a living model.

  • The wall behind to match the plinth stone. If funds permit the wall could be say, 5 meters high with map of South Africa showing battle sites and the Australians involved. Dates KIA even WIA if details are known.

  • Plaques to be in cast bronze.

  • A plaque will be required to commemorate each of , The Royal Australian Artillery (RAA), The Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. All units should be listed on the wall or on plaques elsewhere.

  • Further plaques will be required for, the history of Australia’s contribution of the Boer War, the principal donors who have funded the Memorial and the principals who have initiated the BWM project and brought it to completion.

  • Provision for ramps for the disabled..

  • Statue to be at least life size.

  • Provision for flags and wreaths.
